FoodCorps, a new national AmeriCorps school garden and farm-to-school service program, has named the DGS as one of 10 Host Sites it will collaborate with to launch the initiative. FoodCorps will serve vulnerable children, improving access to healthy, affordable food, while training young leaders for careers in food and agriculture. FoodCorps service members will be placed at each of our four garden schools during the 2011-2012 school year
FoodCorps means new opportunities for people to work in service for our communities on issues of childhood obesity prevention and farm to school. Delta Garden Study FoodCorps members will be placed in the fall of 2011 at DGS garden sites, creating 6 new jobs in the Central and Delta regions of the state. They will assist the DGS Garden Manager to build and maintain the garden and to educate students about healthy food and nutrition. The FoodCorps planning team reviewed 108 Host Site proposals submitted from 39 states and the District of Columbia. To hear more listen to this story on KUAR FM 89.1.
