Mabelvale Garden Update »Mabelvale Garden Update This past week, Karl Heinbockel and fellow Delta Garden Study interns have had the opportunity to escape the fluorescent lights of the office and work in the bright sunshine at the Mabelvale Magnet Middle School gardens and greenhouse. In spite of the oppressive heat, there is still much to do to prepare for the coming school year at Mabelvale Magnet Middle School. We are removing the residue from last year's crops (and weeds!) and replacing them with a buckwheat cover crop to revitalize the soil. The buckwheat cover crop suppresses weed growth and once tilled in will add important organic material back into the soil. This allows new plants the ample nutrients necessary to blossom with great vigor. Healthy soil has been our focus this summer. In the fall, we will concentrate our efforts at producing a variety of food crops with the help of our students at Mabelvale! In the coming weeks, we will be continuing to clean up and organize the garden and greenhouse spaces so that this school year will be a great one for Delta Garden Study's showcase garden - Mabelvale!

Harrisburg Middle School celebrated its new Delta Garden Study grant, sponsored by the USDA and Agricultural Research Service, on Tuesday, May 10, by having a ribbon cutting and breaking ground, where soon their new garden will be located.Read more.

HARRISBURG, AR (KAIT) - The Delta Garden at Harrisburg Middle School will participate in a program to grow healthy produce in class. The school, which is one of five in the state in the garden program, will join with Arkansas Children's Hospital Research Institute and the USDA to create a garden for students. The district hopes the program will offer students a new way of learning healthy habits. "They'll be coming out twice a week through their science class," Emily English with the Delta Garden Study tells Region 8 News, "they'll also be involved in after school activities and we'll have volunteer activities." Delta Garden Specialist Ryan Norman says this garden program is beneficial in more ways than one. "They're also getting outside. They're getting to work out some of that energy because they have so much energy, they have to sit a desk for 8 or 9 hours a day," Norman said. The middle school will be able to hire a full-time garden specialist, who will run the class through the science department. Work on the garden will start before the next school year.
