Job Description:
Overview: This position will work with the Garden Program Specialist, other DGS interns and volunteers to maintain the gardens and greenhouse at Monticello Middle School and assist with the teaching of garden-based science lessons to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Delta Garden Study gardens integrate organic gardens, greenhouses, rainwater harvesting systems, vermiculture, season extension and chickens into productive learning laboratories that the Garden Program Specialists can use to deliver the science based curriculum developed by DGS staff.
Responsibilities include:
1. Teaching assistance during school garden lessons (Fall and Spring Semesters Only)
2. Greenhouse management and production
3. Educational vegetable and fruit garden design
4. Field fertility and mulching systems
5. Harvest and post-harvest handling
6. Season extension techniques
7. Compost and vermicompost management and harvesting
8. Effective record-keeping and data collection
Special circumstances:This position will require reliable transportation to and from our school site at Monticello Middle School.
Requirements: All majors are welcome; however, students with an interest in dietetics, agriculture, or business are encouraged to apply.
Perks: Although this is an unpaid internship, it provides the opportunity to participate in the groundwork of an innovative school garden and childhood obesity study and gain hands-on knowledge in sustainable agriculture. Credit is available to students per an affiliated agreement with their university. This can be created if one does not currently exist.
